By bike to Bolgheri, and back down the Viale dei Cipressi

From San Vincenzo to Bolgheri by bike is about 20 km. The ride we recommend is a loop of about 42 km: you climb to Castagneto Carducci, ride to Bolgheri through the vineyards and come down the Viale dei Cipressi. On a regular bike it takes a full morning, on an e-bike you can take it easy.

The stages

  • 12 km · the climb

    San Vincenzo – Castagneto Carducci

You leave town heading north and climb to the village of Castagneto, where Carducci spent his childhood. It is the hardest stretch: at the top there is a bar for the first stop and a view over the coast.

  • 10.5 km · the vineyards

    Castagneto – Bolgheri

You ride down among the olive groves and the Bolgheri DOC vineyards, past the wineries. Many offer visits and tastings, but almost always by appointment: if you want to stop, call the day before.

  • 20 km · the way back

Bolgheri – Viale dei Cipressi – San Vincenzo

From the village you ride down the Viale dei Cipressi to San Guido, about 4.5 km dead straight between the trees. Then back towards San Vincenzo on the roads near the coast.

Before you set off

If you stop for a tasting, you still have 20 km to ride afterwards: taste a little and have the wine shipped, or come back for it by car.

The Viale dei Cipressi and the roads between Castagneto and Bolgheri are open to cars: at summer weekends there is traffic. Better to set off early in the morning.

E-bikes can be hired in town: we keep the rental shops' leaflets in the office. When you get back, you can wash the bikes and charge them in the shared areas.

If you go by car instead: from here to Bolgheri village it is 25 to 30 minutes.
